The world’s first international surrealist exhibition took place at Den Frie Udstillingsbygning in 1935. The exhibition Kubisme=Surrealisme presented artworks by Jean Arp, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, René Magritte, Joan Miro, Paul Klee, Man Ray, Meret Oppenheim, Yves Tanguy, The Halmstad-group, Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen, Franciska Clausen, Wilhelm Freddie, Henry Heerup, Rita Kernn-Larsen, Gustaf Munch-Petersen and more.
In recent years, new remarkable surrealist currents have permeated contemporary art. Where the claim of historical surrealism was to let the unconscious overflow into society and thereby overturn it, the colonization of the mind in late capitalism has created similar surrealistic visuals, working in reverse.
