Since the first exhibition in 1891, Den Frie Udstilling’s Spring Exhibition has been a major draw, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The association was created in opposition to the establishment at Charlottenborg, and as an idea, it is rooted in the Danish cooperative movement. Today, the association consists of 56 artists.
This year, 43 artists are participating in the exhibition, presenting—as usual—a wide range of media, approaches, and themes: from series of photographs and prints to large-scale paintings, installations, and sculptures several meters high. With the cooperative format, there is no overarching theme that the art must conform to. Each artwork in the exhibition has been selected for the occasion by the individual artist, and often reflects their current artistic practice.
This year, Den Frie Udstilling’s hanging committee consists of the association’s board, which includes the artists Camilla Berner, Yvette Brackman, Ulrik Heltoft, Søren Jensen, and Pia Rönicke.
