Decembristerne was founded in 1928, and a few years later the association began exhibiting at Den Frie, where it has presented its exhibitions ever since, with only a few exceptions. Decembristerne is characterised by its collective and conceptual approach and its sustained experimentation with exhibition formats, interdisciplinary practices and collegial encounters through art.

In 2026, the stage serves as the focal point of Decembristerne’s exhibition, both as a physical structure and as an overarching thematic figure. For the exhibition, the association has invited 15 guest artists to exhibit alongside its members. The exhibition explores how elements of staging are already present in most exhibition contexts across different media and artistic positions. By using the stage as a framework, it creates a space in which this is not only addressed as a theme but tested in practice through encounters between artwork, body, voice and audience.
