PEGASUS is the latest chapter in Den Fries’ unique history as an artist hub and gathering place for temporary communities across generations. Den Frie Udstillingsbygning is a place where people meet, and our history testifies to how fateful it can be informal to drink a cup of coffee or a glass of wine with a colleague or casually meet for an exhibition opening.
PEGASUS is a freespace where artists, art professionals, passers-by and the audience can meet in conversation and break bread so to speak – with a friend and across the table. There is room for everything from communal dining and sparring dinners to the light lunch or a quick coffee on the go. At the same time, PEGASUS gives rise to new exhibition formats by inviting art into the café room. A continuation of the legacy of Dens Fries’ traditional association dinners as well as the 60s art embrace of the private sphere and thus also of the kitchen and the dining situation.
PEGASUS works as a natural extension of a living artists’ house and is run by Den Frie it self. The changing menu focuses on seasonal ingredients, quality, simplicity and generosity. Therefore, you can always find a selection of sandwiches, salads and small dishes, as well as a good selection of natural wine and beer, coffee and cake.
Decorated based on the history of Den Fries
The two architects Mathias Mentze and Alexander V. Ottenstein have made an extensive redesign of Den Frie Udstillingsbygnings café Pegasus, which is based on J. F. Willumsen’s iconic architecture. By bringing key elements from Den Fries ‘exhibition halls, such as formwork boards or the historic benches into play downstairs, Den Fries’ characteristic materiality is drawn down into the café. Studies of Den Fries ‘octagonal exhibition halls have also formed the basis for newly designed side tables, and the house’s large historic artist dinners have been the starting point for two new, large long tables, just as a few copies of Den Fries’ iconic wicker chairs have now been reproduced for the café. . Above the entrance to the cafe hangs a drawing of the pegasus, as a sign that this is Den Frie.
