OUTDOOR EXPERIMENTS

Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art initiates Outdoor-Experiments, a 4-year art, architecture and performance project, which investigates Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art’s physical placement and significance as a culture institution in and for its local environment.

The intention with the project is to explore and experiment with the interaction between the culture institution and the citizens in the public space, thereby breaking the building’s architectural boundaries between indoor and outdoor. Outdoor-Experiments wishes to involve a series of artists and architects who each get the possibility to experiment with J. F. Willumsen’s building, the architecture and the square in front of Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, plus the 8 roads leading to the building.

TENT INSTALLATION BY ULTRA GRØN AT ØSTERPORT STATION AND THE BEECH TREE OUTSIDE OF DEN FRIE CENTRE OF CONTEMPORARY ART 2nd of July 2010 to 2nd of January 2011

It is a great pleasure to present the artist collective ULTRA GRØN’s tent installation that will be visible to everyone passing Østerport Station and Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art during the next 6 months. DSB and Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art have initiated a unique collaboration to launch the artist collective ULTRA GRØN’s tent installation.

ULTRA GRØN will assemble tents of various sizes and colours, into which electric light will be inserted, creating a beautiful and intense play of colours. The tents take on the appearance of sculptural shapes and create ambiguity through mirroring and interconnection - the familiar and easily recognizable tent becomes an enormous, indefinable, aesthetic luminous shape. When taking a closer look, one discovers that the shapes are just made of normal tents and the viewer’s own associations and references are challenged.

ULTRA GRØN has chosen the location at Østerport Station in order to challenge DSB’s passengers’ associations of the room they use daily. The people passing through the station are invited to relate to travelling and to moving from one place to another, from one context to another. A station is not only a room for transit, but a place where the waiting situation creates space for associations and images from the context one comes from or is headed towards. ULTRA GRØN’s installation emphasizes the station’s potential as a reflective space in our everyday life.
