Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art initiates Outdoor-Experiments, a 4-year art, architecture and performance project, which investigates Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art’s physical placement and significance as a culture institution in and for its local environment.
The intention with the project is to explore and experiment with the interaction between the culture institution and the citizens in the public space, thereby breaking the building’s architectural boundaries between indoor and outdoor. Outdoor-Experiments wishes to involve a series of artists and architects who each get the possibility to experiment with J. F. Willumsen’s building, the architecture and the square in front of Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, plus the 8 roads leading to the building.

LIGHT-RELIEF BY HANS E. MADSEN AT DEN FRIE CENTRE OF CONTEMPORARY ART
It is a great pleasure to present the danish artist Hans E Madsen’s outdoor Light-Relief, which will be visible for everyone passing by, for the next 6 months Hans E Madsen has worked with light installations and art in the public space for several years. By using colour and minimalist references, he composes and draws architectonical constructions, which relates to the surrounding environment. Hans E Madsen has exhibited both nationally and internationally, latest he has realised an extensive light installation for HOPENHAGENLive at the town hall square in Copenhagen. The Light-Relief on Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art’s exterior consists of a 21 meter long grid, which constitutes a double wall on the outside of the already exiting building. The luminous areas are placed so that they enhance the architecture of the building, and during the following 6 months they will change colour and structure.
The presentation of Hans E Madsen’s work is the beginning of Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art’s 4-year project Outdoor-Experiments, an art, architecture and performance project, which investigates Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art’s physical placement and signification as a culture institution in and for its local environment. Apart from Hans E Madsen’s participation in the project, 7 other Scandinavian artists and architects are involved. They will, as well for a period of 6 months, get the opportunity to explore the building’s architecture, the square in front plus the 8 roads leading to the building. The aim with the project is to integrate the artistic praxis and the artistic expression in the everyday life of public space, in order to reach an audience that normally does not seeks into Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art.
The Light-Relief can be seen and experienced everyday at Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, on the Corner of Oslo Plads/Øster Voldgade until the end of June 2010.
